Why buy this 1888-S Silver Morgan Dollar?

No collection of historic American coins is complete without this 1888-S Morgan Silver Dollar. The coin comes from the tenth-anniversary issue of one of the most beloved series in American history. Thanks in part to its tradition-breaking obverse design, the coin played a small role in helping the nation to heal in the wake of the bloody Civil War that was fought in the decade prior to the initial release of the series.

  • This coin is $1 legal tender in the United States.
  • This Silver Dollar was struck on a 26.73 g planchet of .900 fine silver.
  • The coin bears the San Francisco Mint's "S" mint mark.
  • This coin was part of a mintage of 657,000 pieces.

Patriotic Eagle Design by George T. Morgan

Obverse: Both faces of this coin were designed by George T. Morgan. On the obverse is a left-side profile of Liberty. This Liberty design is noteworthy because it marked the first time that an artist chose an American-style model rather than a Greek-style model for the figure. Liberty's effigy is encircled by thirteen stars and the inscriptions "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1888."

Reverse: An open wreath partially encircles an eagle, which holds arrows and an olive branch on the reverse. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between the bird's outstretched wings. Rim inscriptions encircling the image provide the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR." The seventh Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, George T. Morgan was a prolific designer of coins and medals. This Silver Dollar is his best-known work.
